We Go Wednesday – Conkerr Cancer, A Case For Smiles
This past weekend, we had the pleasure of joining our amazing children’s museum in creating designer pillow cases that will brighten the hospital rooms of children at the Seattle Children’s Hospital. We had so much fun at last year’s event, which made 75 pillowcases, and this time the whole gang was able to go!
In 2002, at the age of 12, Cindy Kerr’s son Ryan was diagnosed with cancer and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face. He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for the other children in the Oncology Unit.
Sadly, in 2008 he lost his battle, but his mother continues her pillowcase project, and in just over two years, ConKerr Cancer has delivered over 210,000 cheerful pillowcases to sick children in hospitals across the country, established 117 chapters serving children in 172 hospitals and pediatric hospices across the United States, Canada and South Africa.
We decorated fabric panels with fabric markers that the lovely seamstresses then sewed onto the material that they had turned into the pillowcases!
Don’t they look excited? I think someone was talking to them and they were looking away…but here is Dad and the little one with their finished product!
