Planning an 80s-themed 50th birthday party is basically an excuse to go all-in on neon, disco balls, and pure nostalgia. For my milestone weekend in Bellevue, WA, I wanted a fun, easy-to-access location for out-of-town guests and a grown-up playground for the venue. I’m sharing my inspiration, venue choice, and decor ideas behind my 80s-inspired 50th birthday party. While the celebration was back 2024, retro trends are more popular than ever in 2026.

A Weekend To Remember
In 2024, I turned 50 on the exact day of the week I was bornโSaturdayโand the very next day was Motherโs Day. Classic timing. That kicked off months of planning: Pinterest boards, venue research, and lots of โis this too much?โ (Answer: no.) Because family and friends were traveling in, I wanted a spot that was easy to get to, had plenty to do nearby, and would make a long weekend feel like a mini getaway. Bellevue, WA checked every box.
The Location

We hosted events the entire weekend, and the birthday party was at Forum Social House, a grown-up playground. From quirky and unique mini golf, Topgolf Swing Suites, and a nightclub, it was the perfect party spot. We rented the Clubhouse, a fully private event space. It had its own Swing Suite and a dedicated staff to meet our needs.
The Theme

Before I share the amazing party photos in the next post, take a look at some of my inspiration boards; it was throwback time. I lived and breathed this 80s MTV Mitzvah. It is so over the top and the perfect inspiration point. I loved the hot pink elements and disco balls galore.
We were working with a limited setup time and party space. It was hard to trim things to make it work. But, you can’t do everything, so choose the most important elements to focus on. For example, the party backdrop/photo op was a must. Also, non-negotiable, bright colors and disco balls.

The Invitation

I love a good invite; it is your first chance to give your guests a taste of the fun to come, set expectations and lock in those RSVPs. Surprisingly, I didn’t go with a neon maximalist invite, keeping it modern and clean. As always, I turned to Minted for the invitation, which I then wrapped in vellum and closed with a wax seal. Included was a card pointing to a free party website from Minted, detailing the weekend’s activities.
The Look
My look was disco glam all the way. I originally bought the pleated Anthropologie dress and loved itโuntil I realized a night of dancing and shenanigans would require constant adjusting. I did end up wearing it later that year to the Marine Corps Birthday Ballโฆbut thatโs another story.

I went the jumpsuit route and found a sequined one from Tall Size. After a couple of fittings, it fit perfectly and was comfortable enough to actually enjoy the night. The strappy heels put in serious work, too (they also made a repeat appearance at the ball).
Stay tuned for Part 2, where Iโm sharing the full photo recap of my 80s-inspired 50th birthday weekend.
