A Wrinkle In Time Party Table
Growing up, I couldn’t get enough of Madeleine L’Engle’s Time Quintet; did you know that A Wrinkle In Time is the first book? My inner kid did the Happy Dance when I first heard about the new movie adaptation, opening today! You all know how much I love movie parties, so of course I had to create a table to celebrate.
One of my favorite parts when working on book/movie themed parties, is what aspects to use! I love it when guests go ‘Ah…I see what you did there!’ Because the story is about traveling through space (and the later books, time), I created a fun centerpiece to reflect our space odyssey. I wanted the table to feel like we are really travelling to distant planets.
- I took inspiration from those delightful solar systems we all had to make as kids. Sidebar, they still make these kits.
- I broke out acrylic paint to color the foam balls in a variety of shades and textures. Remember my Dudes & Brews’ pretzel centerpiece? I did a similar setup, covering the pegboard in black paper and painting the skewers.
- Paper Source makes the most amazing gift wrap paper, especially the marble ones. The swirls reminded me of gases that cover many planets, so I whipped out a few circle punches to create planet confetti.
Keeping with our space theme, we have to have Galaxy Doughnuts! Because we had to have doughnuts…
Galaxy Doughnuts
- In a large, microwave-safe bowl, tint homemade or store-bought buttercream frosting to desired shade of purple.
- Heat in the microwave to a thick, but slightly runny consistency.
- Add one drop each of black, yellow and blue food coloring to the frosting, then did a single swirl to distribute the colors.
- Cake doughnuts are sturdy enough for dunking the tops into the melted frosting, then set on a sheet of wax paper to cool.
- Immediately sprinkle with edible metallic star sprinkles and glitter dust.
- My favorite star plates (Dollar Tree, baby!) paired with disco ball tumblers add a nice shine to our table.
- Of course, we have to have math and scientific references with our napkins and my favorite washi tape. Unfortunately, the napkins are no longer available but here is a fun substitute!
- Do you get our red gumballs reference? Yes, it is when the group arrives at Camazotz and everyone is bouncing red balls in perfect sync.
The rest of our menu is inspired by the book’s opening scenes where various characters are making sandwiches and drinking hot cocoa. Set up a sandwich bar with a menu and all the fixings so guests can make their own. Sorry, no liverwurst here, but roast beef is a good (and tastier) substitute!
- The Charles Wallace – sliced bread and jam
- The Mrs. Murry – sliced bread, cream cheese and liverwurst (roast beef)
- The Meg Murry – sliced bread with cream cheese OR mayo, lettuce and tomato
- The Mrs. Whatsit – sliced bread, tuna and mayo
I hope you have been inspired to host your own A Wrinkle In Time movie party before heading out to check out the movie! What are you looking forward to seeing in this new movie?
