Make Christmas Bow Cake Toppers With Polymer Clay

This is a sponsored post; payment, trade, and/or products have been received in exchange for promotion for Staedtler North America.  As always, all opinions are my own.

You all know I love oven-bake clay; when Staedtler North America reached out to try their new product,ย FIMO Leather-Effect Oven-Bake Clay, a new line of modeling clay, I was in!

With FIMO leather-effect, they have a clay which is similar to leather in look and feel. ย When baked, it can be sewn, cut, punched, bent, and combined with many other materials! How cool is that?

Handmade paper bows are an easy craft; they may look a little complicated at first, butย they are actually really easy to make. I was inspired to make my own versions of Christmas bow toppers from polymer clay. From cakes to cupcakes, pies, and even stacks of Christmas morning pancakes, they are holiday magic!

What You’ll Need:

  • FIMO Leather-Effect Oven-Bake Clay in the colors of your choice
  • acrylic roller or clay machine
  • craft blade or sharp scissors
  • modelling tool
  • superglue
  • hot glue
  • thick skewers (the ones used for caramel apples)
  • gold washi tape
  1. You will need 5 strips 3/4″ wide; 3 at 6″ long, 2 at 5″ long, and 1 at 2″ long.
  2. Roll out FIMO leather-effect to a 1/8″ thick rectangle, at least 6″ long.
  3. You can one, cut the strips with a craft blade, then bake or two, bake the piece, then cut the strips with scissors. I tried it both ways; I preferred to cut the strips first since I could re-roll the pieces after I cut the strips (green strips). For the pink strips, I baked, then drew the lines with a permanent marker; you can still see them before I assembled the bows. Because the bows twisted inward, you won’t see the marker lines.
  4. Either option, place the clay on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and harden it for 30 minutes at 265 degrees in a preheated oven. Allow FIMO to cool completely.
  5. Begin twisting each of the three long strips so that they have a loop at each end. Secure each end with a little superglue. Repeat with the two shorter strips.
  6. Then, layer and stick the three largest pieces, hot-gluing each layer; then layer and hot-glue. Bend the remaining piece as a loop in the center; it may be trimmed if needed, to fit.
  7. Use gold washi tape to wrap the skewers, then hot-glue each bow to a skewer.

Add a few to a cake or just a single one to a cupcake! And speaking of cake…how about this easy way to take a storebought cheesecake to the next level, by adding brownie pieces, chilling for about an hour, then drizzle with my easy ganache recipe!

Of course, I couldn’t just dress up this cheesecake and not do a whole table! Prepare for an evening of holiday (cough, Hallmark Channel) movies with sweet treats and cups of cocoa. It doesn’t take a lot to make a special evening in.
