History in the Making
Even as I type this post, a few hours after Barack Obama swept away the electoral votes to become the 44th President of the United States, it feels a little anti climatic. After months of speculation, bad singing, awesome SNL satires, and hundreds of hours of news and commercials, it has all come down to this. And once again, I’ve lived through another moment, a “Where Were You” moment. There have been a few that have been horrid and life altering, like the Challenger explosion and 9-11. Some that were sheer moments of stupidity, like the 2004 Presidential Election. Moments like the births of my sons, are once-in-a-lifetime.
Watching Obama walk the platform in Chicago to give his victory speech marked another moment. The moment when after finally getting the right to vote enforced 43 years ago, with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a black man is President.
I wish him, and our entire country well, because he’s got a hell of a mess to clean-up.
