Fiesta Friday – 90’s Fashionably Undead Prom At Seattle’s EMP

90's Fashionably Undead Prom At Seattle's EMP; Pulp Fiction

Last weekend, I was excited to finally get the chance to attend the Experience Music Project (EMP)’s Fashionably Undead Prom for an evening of nightmarish ‘90s fun. There were lots of great ideas you can incorporate into your own Halloween party (it’s not too late!), so I’m sharing some of the fun! I apologize for my not-so-awesome photos, it was a little dark and strobe-lighty…

My friend and I decide to channel our inner Pulp Fiction with her as Vincent Vega and I as a really-stretch-the-imagination Jules Winnfield.  And surprisingly, everyone knew who we were.  Even when we weren’t together…so win!

Surprisingly, we only ran into only one other Vincent costume and no other Jules…but Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace was very popular; there were easily eight or so we counted.  We had to pose with the best one there! She rigged her hypodermic needle with wire and tape to stick out of her chest…she was such a rock star!

They are great, last minute costume ideas; borrow a man’s suit, get yourself a curly afro wig, sideburns and moustache for Jules, and wear your hair straight and color in small sideburns and a ‘butt chin’ with eyeliner for Vincent.  I thrifted a white shirt to bloody up but you can do what Vincent did and add a bullet hole accent if it’s your ‘real’ shirt.  Throw in a black briefcase and you are ready to dance the twist.

  • The prom photo booth was the most popular.  I love how they started with a white palette and gored it up. You can duplicate the look, covering furniture with white sheets and blood-spattered plastic.  If you only have a wall, splatter white butcher paper, then hang the paper.

  • I never, ever tire of themed parties! Getting your guests in on the fun is half the decor and a great ice-breaker…plus, who doesn’t love dressing up!  Since this was a 90’s theme, there was everyone from undead Wilson and Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor from Home Improvement and Britney Spears to TLC’s Left Eye to Austin Powers and a Fembot.

  • Another great touch is this display on the stage.  With tinsel curtains (easily found at your favorite party store) and large mylar balloons (I’m sure they are from North Star Balloons; look them up to find a retailer), this makes another great photo op or a fabulous backdrop to your food/dessert table.

  • Guests visited the salon to gorify their looks or get hair and makeup touchups! If you have the space, set up a small area with makeup, fake blood, and hair spray; sweating off your look is not a cute way to go.

We are so going again next year with more people, and a group costume is in order! We had so much fun; any party in the EMP’s amazing spaces is always a blast.

Want to see more amazing photo booth shots and get even more Halloween costume inspired? Visit DaBooth’s page and EMP’s Flickr page. Sadly, there are several amazing ones who didn’t stand in the line for an hour for their photo like the rest of us fools (totally worth it though) that aren’t even there, like The Lawnmower Man body suit costumes.  They had these cool laser lights on them and his ‘wife’ had these crazy heels on, I don’t know how she made it through the night in them.
