We do this occasionally with our in-laws; some families find it easier to give one big family gift that everyone can enjoy instead of buying individual gifts.  This works out perfect if you are trying to keep it ‘fair’.  You will never hear the end of it if little cousin Susie thinks her sister’s gift is better/cost more/is cooler than hers.
