Well, hello there! It has been a while since I’ve posted new blog content, in fact, it was for Father’s Day and pretty sporadic already. 2021 has certainly been a ride, although not as bananas as 2020, but holding its own. This space is my creative outlet but my job takes up so much of my brain, especially when it comes to creativity. I’ve been enjoying following everyone else’s content, it’s nice to let someone else do the heavy lifting.

Plus, we haven’t been able to host events, so I feel even less inspired. But that’s just me…and that doesn’t really help you, dear reader, looking for new and exciting stuff. However, the holiday season always reinvigorates and inspires me, so here I am! 😊

I’m all ready for the change in season, styling our bookshelves for Halloween. I want to fill them to the brim with so much goodness. Usually, I like a clean look, but for the holidays, I like to go all out! Over the years I’ve collected quite a stockpile of Halloween items and I love to shop my home for fun ways to reuse items. I’ve been pulling out my cake stands and other vessels that only make an appearance for events, because, why not?

Since I love everything I’ve collected over the years and can’t NOT use everything, I have each shelf tell a story…a vignette if you are feeling fancy. Here’s what I’ve done to style my Halloween bookshelves:

  • Here’s a big decorating secret; I use anchor pieces year round, then mix in seasonal fare. This cuts down on having to rearrange everything; alot of bookshelf styling tips tell you to empty your shelves. Yikes, I can’t do that everytime…some are permanent exhibits like hubby’s Marine Corps shelf and the middle gaming shelves.
  • For example, I love to use solid color ginger jars like the various sized white, green and black ones seen above. They are a neutral anchor I can build any theme around.
  • Have a collection of pieces? Show them off! Using vessels like a few in my milk glass collection let’s me fill them with any type of seasonal decor.

  • My current obsession is creating color vignettes on each shelf with my favorite books. It’s another fun way to tie everything together as a cohesive look, especially if you want to use a variety of objects. By sorting your decorative items, then group them by color, size, shape, etc. it makes it so much easier to style.
  • I have been scouring thrift and second-hand book stores for stylish books; I don’t just style with them, I actually want to read them. Don’t judge a book, take a peek under its jacket (like my copy of IT) and check out the spine. You would be surprised how nice the books are underneath.

  • Layering elements on bookshelves gives depth; I like to place my large pieces first, as backdrops for smaller elements. Texture is important for visual interest, so I love to add in textiles, faux plants, velvet and wool spun items, etc.
  • My faux plants are around all-year; make them seasonal ready by adding in spooky critters.
  • I’ve been playing around with different arrangements and combinations to finally settle on one. It’s OK to play around with your layouts, walk away and come back to tweak things. Give your self the time and freedom to let things sit, or get inspired.
