How to Create a Fruit and Doughnut Board For Brunch

All the doughnuts! Today is National Doughnut Day and the finale of our weeklong ode to all things doughnut. Take a peek back at days 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Of course, I saved the best for last! Doughnut decorating has been one of my favorite ways to entertain, from just-because moments to larger gatherings.

Usually, it’s all about the sprinkles and candy toppings. But, to ‘class things up’ for a grown-up breakfast or brunch event, use fresh seasonal fruit instead and create a fruit and doughnut board.

Create a fabulous spread that seems really extra but so easy to put together. This is perfect for your next breakfast/brunch gathering, from birthdays to Girls’ Day out. Fruit makes doughnuts healthier, right?

The best part…making Insta-worthy doughnut creations with cream cheese frosting. I know…so good.

Yummy fresh fruit ideas to try….

  • sliced fruits like peaches, kiwi, and apples
  • berries; blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc.
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • mango

  • pineapple slices (pat excess juice off with a paper towel)

Entertaining a crowd? You can use small plates or mini cheeseboards so that everyone has their own workspace. Set each area with a small knife for slicing pre-cut fruit and piping bag (or bowl) of frosting.

Don’t forget other fun garnishes like shredded coconut, edible flowers and mint leaves.

  • If you are using a piping bag, use a extra-large round tip like a Wilton 2A. Or just cut the tip off the piping bag and use without a frosting tip.

Oh, that’s right, we haven’t talked about the frosting….this recipe makes enough to pipe about 10 cake doughnuts. However, feel free to double the recipe if you want to make more.

Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

To make the frosting, beat all ingredients together until fluffy.

  • Don’t forget, it is cream cheese frosting so refrigerate any unused portion.

There you have it, a fruit and doughnut board that is a clever addition to any brunch or breakfast.

I hope that you enjoyed all the doughnut ideas this week! Now go forth and enjoy the day safely…there are lots of great places with free doughnut deals. Locally-owned businesses and smaller chains also may have deals; check out their social media channels.
