15 Fabulous Ginger and Temple Jars You Need In Your Home

Sometimes I’m on top of decorating trends, but other times, I need to warm up to them. One of those trends is chinoiserie; you’ve seen those blue and white jars, vases, orbs, everywhere! Throw open a preppy, Palm Beach, or Southern living magazine and you’ll see those giant jars filled with an endless abundance of flowers. Today, I’m sharing 15 fabulous ginger and temple jars you need in your home!
I’m not sure why I never really loved the trend; I mean, blue and white patterns? How are you supposed to work with such a strong design element? First, Lo Home sucked me into her “Ginger Jars Don’t Have To Be Blue/White” world. Then, I started looking at ginger jar styling ideas, and those chinoiserie jars kept popping up. Once I realized they could fit into just about every type of decor, I was hooked.
Because I’m a nerd, I also dug into its background, since I have always assumed they were of Chinese origin. After all, every jar practically has a pagoda, koi, or cherry blossoms painted on it. Actually, they are European interpretations of Chinese styles, dating back to the 17th century. I won’t get into the weeds (and there is a lot) of the history, whether cultural appropriation or imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I’ll let you Google that.
Even the terminology is incorrect; ginger jar is often a blanket term for this type of lidded ceramic pot but there are subtle differences. Ginger jars are traditionally round, wide in the shoulders with a small mouth and a traditionally domed lid with no additional ornamentation. On the other hand, the temple jar has ornamentation or other type of decoration on the lid and more of a fishtail shape.
So, now that I’ve taken you on a wild history lesson, back to the jars themselves. Firstly, head to your favorite home decor spots like HomeGoods or Hobby Lobby; you will most likely find traditional (and more affordable) blue and white jars. Even places you wouldn’t expect like Lamps Plus has options. Then, you can start moving into the big leagues:
